Hi all
Was wondering if any body could lend me some of their wisdom on a small problem i am having with my new tank..... This my first post so any thoughts and advise are very welcome.
my set up is:
tank 60x30x30
external JBL FILTER
heater
C02 tetra optimat
air stone
hood with 15watt lamp (new lamp)
Tetra substrate to 3cm with 3 4to cm of 2-3mm graval
various plants
no fish as yet
I have had this tank set up before and was happy with it. This time though i wanted to concerntrate on trying the fishless cycle decribed on this forum(ta by the way!) and its worked well. I want a good planted tank so i have gone for a substrate this time and am using flora plus as a sup for the plants as well. I want to be sure that before i add any fish that my plants are happy because i dont want a lot of algie growing. It is hard to resist but i think it is worth the wait. The plants have been in about 6 days, however in the last couple of days i have noticed a brown discoloration on some of the leaves and was wondering if this is algie or a lack in some mineral the plant needs.... I have noticed a brownish colour on a decoration behind the plant as well, can any one help? there is some slight algie which is a bright greenish colour on the same decoration. Have had algie before and want to avoid it as much as poss this time round if i can ..... I have my light on for 12 hours a day on a timer. I am told that the water down here in hard. Not quite sure i understand any implications this might have.
I have a good water clarity and my local shop in Porton has carried out a test and says i am ready to add a few hardy fish. But i want to hold off a bit for some advice from you guys first, as i feel the fish my add to the algie prob further.
Here are my water readings:
temp - 25c
kh - 8dkh
ph - 7
gh - >7d
N02 - 0.05
N03 - mg/l 10
fe - 0.4
these results are after a 25% water change the N03 reading was 20 mg/l before ( thinking this my be my prob.) ?
when i add fish ill put the airstone on at lights out and add C02 during the day... When and how many fish do you think i should add? and what type first.. i want to be as kind to the fish as i can as i lost some when i first started back in Germany.

Thanks a lot for all the great tips i have picked up from this site previously. Top stuff.
