Hi I am thinking of getting some corys for my tank? I have a 180 litre tank, but it is long 39 inches rather than tall. I have substrate so that is good Thing is I have read they like to live in a group and mix well with all type of corys. How many do you feel I could keep happily in my tank ?
At mo I have
6 Guppys
2 Plattys
5 Blackwidows
2 Bala sharks
7 Kului loaches

I have an external fluval306 so great filter

All Ideas for this would be a great help as learnt from bad experiences, not to trust lfs for advice

id sort out your stocking before you think of adding more fish. your tank is far to small for bala sharks. they also like to be in groups so ideally 6+

but corys are bottom dwellers so youd have room for 6 maybe even 12.

Hi Cathy, my tank is 34 inches in length and there's currently 6 bronze and 4 peppered in there. I could fit maybe another 4-6 but only because I keep up with maintenance and do twice weekly water changes.

I think with the 39" tank you have 12 - 14 would be okay. That way you could do 6 of one species and 6 of another - depending one which type of cory species you like. If you were to go with pygmy's then obviously you could have a lot more

I'm agreeing with Staxx though about the bala sharks. They will rapidly out grow a 39" tank so if you wern't considering upgrading then it might be best to re-home them. I believe the minimum size tank they can live in is around 6ft long but someone with more experience of them may say bigger. I know they get to be a very big fish

Hi I agree about the bala now another bad bit of info of lfs as pointed this out at time and they reasurred me 2 was good and tank ok , only had them a couple of weeks ,they have settled in well, keeping an eye on them . Just getting over giving me group of clowns away which had for a couple of years
Corys looking good cheers for advice there , there a couple of types that I like look of so have to track them down in tropical shops further a field as local ones dont seem to have them
I need to get a couple more plants and hiding places as gave my bogwood away with clowns , hitting the shops next week

Need also to think what to have a middle of tank if balas go , can not be anything timid as hubby works now from that end of room and his filing cabinet is next to tank ,any ideas on this as want to go for something bigger ( not gurami) as to timid.
