Now ive heard a bit about Cory's not being suited to certain substrates so what id like to know is, will they be ok with my fine gravel? I dont want to get a school of Cory's only to have them all ware off there barbs in a few weeks?

Any help will be greatly recieved!

Hi SJ2K, :)

Whether you use fine gravel or sand, make sure that the edges of the individual pieces are rounded, not sharp. This will help to prevent barbel erosion due to abrasion.

With just corys, on a sand bottom, there is very little litter to vacuum up during weekly water changes because their wastes break up and get sucked into the filter. With gravel at the bottom, wastes and uneaten food bits tend to sink into it. This makes it necessary to vacuum it out regularly to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for harmful bacteria which can also cause damage to their barbels. Keeping the depth of the gravel shallow makes this chore easy to do.

How fine is your gravel, SJ2K?

Its about 1-2mm thick, its not too deep either but I was a little concerned over the texture. Its not totally rounded so its possible it could be a problem :(
