Hello I like to save fish from Wal-Mart I use a quarantine tank before my community and I never had a disease or outbreak of any sort
My question is, Does walmart sell male and female corys or just male?

Thanks

By 'saving' those fish you are just creating a demand surely?
Saving one or two will only end up with 5 or 10 more being brought in to replace them - thats my opinion anyway, and I'm sure I've seen it here in the Betta section with the cup issue.

I'd go down the reputable small scale breeder route, they need your business more than anything and at least you know the fish haven't travelled further than you have!

My opinion though, obviously others will see it as an act of grace and will be 100% for it!

I agree with you, hanny.
Find a better place to give your money to; if no-one ever bought fish at Walmart, they'd soon stop stocking them.
But, of course, it's up to you and your conscience to decide.

I doubt very much if the cories at Walmart are sexed; cories aren't that easy to tell apart at the best of times, so I'd be 99% sure they'd sell a mixture of males and females.

Hi bpondabay :)

I doubt very much if the corys being sold at Walmart (or other store) would be intentionally separated by gender. In most (but not all) cases the young males and females are similar in coloration. Also, corys are generally not line bred to create new species that breeders would be trying to prevent hobbyists from breeding themselves.

However, I think that since the females are usually the larger fish in any batch, if the customers pick the biggest and healthiest looking fish from the tank, the smaller males could be the ones remaining after the fish have been in the store for a while. This is not a particular problem as far as the fish are concerned, but if you would like to eventually breed them, try to get them soon after they are delivered to the store and select the males and females yourself.

Walmart does not separate Corys by gender. It's essentially a grab bag.

Also, on the subject of Walmart, every time a fish is bought that sale is tracked and the system automatically orders more based on what has been sold. You can not rescue a fish from Walmart without dooming more. I'm working on a way to circumvent this, but I'm only one cashier.
