i have 2 albino corys ( aeneus )in a tank of their own ready for spawning . i think they are both females, the 1 is huge and is almost busting at the seems and the other 1 is also getting large. My problem is that i carnt seem to find any semi / mature albino males in the pet shops around where im living.
In my other tank i also have 2 male peppered & 2 masked males, could i use either of these to breed with my female albino cordoras??

Hi a.i.m :)

In my other tank i also have 2 male peppered & 2 masked males, could i use either of these to breed with my female albino cordoras??

No, these fish are of different species.

If you could find some bronze C. aeneus, however, it would be a different story. The bronze and albinos are just color variations of the same species and will breed together without having any problems.

You might try asking on the forum or at a local aquarium society to try to find an adult male or two. You never know, you might get lucky. If not, I would suggest buying the best ones you can find and waiting a few months for them to mature. At least they will be helpful in the future, and they do spawn fairly young, so the wait won't be too long.

Many thanks Inchworm,

your reply has hit the nail on the head, im off hunting for some bronze c. aeneus males today!!. ill let you know the out come. ;)

:( but if i dont find a male in time, what will happen to my female albino? will she still lay the eggs and place them around the tank???

Ive had no luck with finding any adult albinos corydoras, so ive had to buy 3 young ones. Not quite sure how things will go when i release them :shifty: , they are slowly adjusting to their new water climate in the bag at the moment. ;)

The 2 females have been realy active the last 2 weeks as im doing water changes at a slightly cooler temperature than the tank and pumping the water back through a spray bar. ( i originaly thought i had a male and female, Doh!!) .

will keep you updated. B)

Hi a.i.m :)

Don't worry about your females; they will be fine. If you want to get them out of condition, I would suggest you stop doing cool water changes. You can also raise the temperature to close to 80 degrees F. for a while too. This will fool them into thinking that it's summer and past the time for spawning.

Your new corys will do fine and will grow up faster than you think, especially if you feed them lots of meaty food.

I'll look forward to seeing you post about them spawning in the future! :D

All 5 albinos are together, the largest looks like shes about to drop her eggs.(shame theres no 1 to fetilise them )She is sitting close to a piece of bog wood looking uncomfortable. one second she is sitting 1 way then she turns and sits the other way totaly ignoring the 3 small catfish pellets ive just dropped in, whilst the other 4 a in an albino scramble munching.

At what age does a corydoras to become sexually mature?
Am i looking at months or years?
Im feeding them blood worm, small chopped worms and a variety of dried foods, could i include anything else in their diet to make it a more meaty diet? ;)
Thanks for your replys!! :p

:D hiya i would lend u a Bronze cory but my tank has ICH and i wouldn't want to give it to you!!!

Hi a.i.m :)

Actually, if you took bigfish up on his offer it would be helping both your fish and his. Yours would be able to spawn while his would be out of the way of medications he doesn't need/

Corys are lucky in that they don't seem to get ich!

Depending on their size, your new corys will mature in several months. However, are you sure you got some males this time? If you did what seems the logical thing to do and picked out the biggest ones they had, chances are you just got more females. :X

no i was able to chose the more slight looking fish, fingers crossed will find out in a few months !!.

Hi a.i.m :)

Good for you!

I can't wait to see your post when the big day finally arrives! :D

ok ive asked big fish to lend me her male bronze, but is there a chance of bringing ICH to my corydoras tank?

mmm very concerned about the dreaded ICH!! :(

Hi a.i.m :)

If bigfish's male will only be around other corys I don't think you have anything to worry about. And, since you can almost always leave the parents in the spawning tank until the time the eggs hatch, it will give you both a few days leeway to make arrangements about when you will get him back. Cory eggs take about 4 days to hatch. :D

hey a.i.m let me know how the little man gets on and if you get any successful spawns....

Hope the little guy didn't piece his little bag!!!! god job u don't live to far away... Could of hoped for better weather tho!!!!
