Hey guys!

I've just got a new tank, 25 litres to be exact, and it's going to house a male betta and (hopefully) like 3-4 cories (most likely pandas). Does this sound okay? Also I have a BN PLec in my larger tank, and he loves the bogwood I put in - do Corys need this in a tank? I'm also going to get 2/3 more plants today - and may pick up the cats today as well - are they quite hardy?

Thanks everyone :good:

and here's the tank..

From what I have been reading, pandas are not especially hardy compared to other cories. It would be best to get one of the cories that can take higher temperatures since the tank will probably be quite warm to make the betta comfortable. Cories do not need ornamental wood in their tank but almost all fish seem to enjoy having places to hide.

Yeah i'm not too bothered by the pandas - just thought I'd try and keep the oriental theme going :p

There are places to hide in the bridge, and I thought about maybe making a small cave out of a submerged pot or rocks or something in the corner, usable by both the betta and the cories?

If I got peppered cories or another hardier species - do you think that tehy would be alright to put in first? Like cycle the tank with? I've never kept cories before you see haha

Hi umlaut31 :)

I wouldn't suggest you consider cycling the tank with the corys. It would be better to use some mature filter media to "clone" this little tank.

C. sterbai are a beautiful cory that would do well in a warmer tank, but they are big enough that you could only fit a couple of them in there. C. paleatus (peppered corys) are better in cooler waters like goldfish thrive in.

There's also the matter of water circulation to consider. Corys need good oxygenation and that might not be possible in that size tank without upsetting the betta. That's often the biggest single problem with this combination of fish.

what you put in with a Betta is ultimately up to the Betta. some are ok with company, some are not, they are fickle creatures those betta's.
as for cories i find mine do like plants and things to hide under. mine are constantly stealing my khuli's cave to hide in.

Well it's got a filter and everything, and there are enough plants in there now to add in the oxygenation and places to hide front.

I don't know whether to risk it or not then - Corys and Bettas are like my joint favourite fish (besides tiger barbs - might just put some of them in :p) so I was really hoping to be able to set up a tank with them both in..

It's currently cycling with some media and a couple of sailfin mollies that I nabbed from my other tank, so when the nitrite evens out I'll be back on here to ask in more detail :good:

cheers :fish:

We have the exact same tank, although not in use anymore! I wouldnt recommend anything like a peppered catfish, they get relatively large and spend alot of time on the bottom, and that tank doesnt have much floor space. Also, you have gravel, and majority of cories prefer sand :)

I agree with mcgrimes - if you want corys in there I'd go for pygmies. They are very pretty and more active than the larger corys, they will be more comfortable in a smaller tank, you can fit more in there without overstraining the filter and in my experience bettas are fine with them. There are three species that would be great in there - C. habrosus, C. hastatus and C. pygmaeus.

I have to tell you that my betta killed my pygmies in a very short time. I lost a couple, wondered why, the last one I watched, it was horrible, there was nothing I could do. That was in a 25l aquacube. I personally would not risk it again. It probably depends on the particular betta, mine was a crowntail, they do seem to be quite aggressive.
