iv got a empty 10g with sand, and a pair of corys i use for cleaning my other tanks. iv become attatched to the little guys and would liek to starte a cory only community where i can keep a collection of differant kinds of corys. how many can i keep in a 10g? well they be fine with there being many differant kinds of cory, or will they not get along? how do i sex a cory, the 2 i have lay eggs so i know they are females, id like to get all females so i dont ahve to worrie about male aggression :D

I'd say 7 at most in a 10gallon and the sexing is easy. Adult females are bigger and rounder than adult males who are thinner and smaller.

Caves, open pieces of wood for cover, lots of plants real or fake and floating plants to break up the surface lighting.

I wouldn't over-plant the tank too much as they enjoy a bit of roaming space, half planted tank would be good.

o yea, im definately keeping teh tank roomy, i like watching them i dont want them to hide :D ill add some pipes and stuff for them to hang out in hide in. i do have some short leafy plants that would be nice for them to play in, but as for somthing to break up surface lighting, can i just have like fake leaves floating in teh surface? or do u mean like a larger area thats shaded by liek a cave or somthing?

thank you guys for the info, its muchly appritiated :D

EDIT: and out of curiosity, how long do corys live, iv had my one pair for about a year now and they were less than a year old wen i got them because they were still growing wen i purchased em ;)

You will need somwhere for them to hide as they are mainly noctornal in nature so it wouldn't be fair to deny them of a good little cave or other dark sleeping space for them. I know that bronze and albino corys have been known to live for 10yrs but alot depends on what kind of conditions the cory is kept in, how ill it gets and how often and what it is fed.

how, thats a long time for a fish :D

i have some medium sized pipeing that would work for them, and if i need more ill just cut it.

how about feeding, would alge tabs be fine for them, or should i throw in flakes too so they get some meat?

Corys can eat fish flakes but it is not the right food for them, catfish pelets are much better.

Bronze cories are said to live up to 18 years but 10-12 is more common. This is what my 30g cory community looks like right now. I'm planning to replant the entire tank into a 50g long or bigger eventually and start breeding them.

Hi GuppyDude :)

A cory community is a wonderful idea! Mine are so much fun!

It's easy to tell the sexes apart because females are usually much larger than males. Here's a picture of a pair of my black C. aeneus, which are a color variation of the bronze cory. You can easily see the difference between them:

I suggest getting a mixed group of males and females. Corys are just not aggressive fish, and it is more natural to have some of each.

I think you would be very happy with 5 or 6 of them in your ten gallon tank, and with 5 there would be room for a betta too. Bettas are excellent additions to any cory tank, IMHO. :D
