it hasn't eaten a bite in 3 days. i've had it for 3 weeks now it was eating just fine before

is it sick or possibly stressed out from high ammonia levels? what should i do?

is it possible that it's a fungal infection?

How high are the ammonia levels that you are talking about? These bottom dwellers can be the first in the tank to let you know that "something fishy" is going on in your substrate or water params.

ALASKA

my test kit shows something high, about 4 ppm ammonia (before yesterday's water change it waas nearly 8ppm)

i also noticed it swimming up to the surface once, indicating he may be needing oxygen

why would he do that when i've had that airstone running the whole time?

nitrite levels are still at 5 ppm, even after my 25% water change

Cories and most bottom dwellers will go to the surface and gulp air regularly even if the water is perfect. So dont worry about that behaviour its normal. Keep doing 50% water changes until that ammonia level is down around 1ppm even if that means doing 2 today. after it is down to that level then just monitor your levels and do appropriate size water changes to keep it around that level. It may slow your cycle slightly but it will help the fish weather the storm. These water changes will also help keep the nitrites under control as these can cause burning of the fish's gills. HTH :)
