Hi do corys or cory fry need alot of light, its just ive just set up my hatching/hospital tank and its not going to have a lamp on it it will mainly rely on the day light that will shine on it will this be ok and is it necessary for them to have a some sort of uv lighting thanks. :good:

Hi stiffler69 :)

As long as they have enough light to be reasonably like a natural environment, they should be OK. Also, they shouldn't be so close to the window that the sun heats the water up or drafts from it cause a chill.

Is this tank for your little albino C. aeneus, or are you hoping to raise some others?

Hi thanks for the reply

Im hoping to try and get a more successful hatching rate from some of the eggs the albino c. aeneus have been laying upto now i have had 4 batchs and only managed to hatch 15 what are doing really well so its not the raising im struggling with its the hatching, Im putting the unsucessful hatching rate down to my tank been a mainly bn plec tank i have 3 adults and around 60-70 young bn in the tank so as you can imagine its not the cleanest enviroment although i do my best to keep it clean.

Im hoping the tank will help me keep a cleaner enviroment for them to hatch into.

As for the location it is near a window but since my computer is at this window too it very rarely has direct sunlight due to the blinds been angled as to allow only a little light through, and as for drafts ive actually gotten it inside the cupboard of my rio125 i selected a tank the correct size to go onto the bottom shelf, so its enclosed a good amount and keeps draughts out, however it is open enough at the back to allow day light in for atleast 8 hours a day.

Really its a learning curve to see if i can manage to hatch more fry :good:

Hi stiffler69 :)

Cleanliness is very important for the health and well being of corys and, even more so, for their eggs and fry. Can you get to it easily enough to do daily water changes when you have fry? How big is the tank?

What will you be using to filter and circulate the water?

Hi yes its easily accesable just a case of removing a shelf slides on and off.

And ive gone for a foam spray bar trickle filter, and a airpump with a mist airstone so the water is very well airated, the tank is 28 litres in capacity its 18"x10"x10" so should be a fair bit of room for them to move around and shoal, but i have got other tanks once they get bigger so their will not be overcrowding.

Hopefully ive covered most things for a successful hatching/raising tank and should be more successful with them.

Thanks for the replys and advice

Hi stiffler69 :)

Your new tank should give you much better chance of success since you can let the corys spawn and then remove them, rather than moving the eggs. You might want to get a small gang valve and another airstone if they spawn on both ends of the tank.

One other thing to consider is your males. If the eggs aren't hatching (and are getting fungus) they might be infertile. It's often recommended to have two males per female to insure fertilization since the females lay so many eggs. :D
