I plan to try and breed some of my corys, I think I have 2 pairs and want to have a couple of babys :)

From the guides I've read I have to do a cool water change to simulate the rainy season. How much cooler should the cooler be? 1 degree? 2 degrees? I'm clueless :look:

Also, how would I look after the eggs? I have a spare tank, about 18l

I think this'll be my first ever bump

Hi Jonty,

I have only once trigger off a spawn from adding a cool water change, and I would say that the water I was putting in was about 5 or 6 degrees less than the normal tank temp.

I think you find it's a mixture of a cool water change and froozen foods (defroseted of course) that trigger off the spawning.

I'm very lucky with my bronze corys all they seem to need is plenty of food. They don't need a cool water change to start them off

Also, how would I look after the eggs? I have a spare tank, about 18l

The're two way that I know of:

1st: Put the breeding corys in the spare tank and try to get them to spawn in there, removing them after they spawn.

2nd: You collect the eggs, and stick them on the sides of the spare tank. I have found if you leave them about 15 mins after they have been
layed, the eggs harden a bit and you don't burst as many. All you do is roll your finger gentley on them till they stick too your finger and
roll them back on to the glass of your spare tank. If they lay them on a leaf it's even easier just take the whole leaf of the plant and put it
into the other tank.

I do the 2nd.

You will need in your spare tank a heater, sponge filter and an air stone, basically when you have the eggs keep the air stone going as this cerculates the water keeping the amount of eggs that gain fungi to a minimum. The warmer the water the quicker they hatch I have found, but
this may also mean that more will be afected to fungi.

HTH I'm sure Inch will be along to help to :good: luck.

Hi Jonty

well i'm a newbie to corys spawning and it appears mine spawn with very little help from me,although i suppose the weekly water change helps.

I removed some eggs and left them in a catching net over an airstone in my platy tank, and this worked for me,2 eggs hatched then a further 6 so i have 8 cory fry. :)

I set up a 4 gal tank with airstone,sponge filter and heater,i did add sand about a week later. i do a 50% w/c daily :)

Good luck :good:

Hi Jonty :)

Let me point out the article that geo7x wrote about breeding corys. There are a lot of variations, but this is a good starting point. Then ask all the questions you like.

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=165155

Are your albino corys C. aeneus? Both the C. paleatus and the C. aeneus like cooler water temperatures in general and will usually spawn spontaneously when they are mature. You need not make any drastic changes but if they are in breeding condition a good water change will often set them off. It's a good idea to give your filter media a rinse in old tank water and vacuum the bottom well at the same time. This simulates nature's rainy season which is when they are naturally inclined to spawn.

:D

Thanks everyone who contributed - I think I may have 2 male peppered and 2 female albino :(

I'm going to get 2 more tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have a pair.

Thanks again everyone!
