My little brother's 10 gal consisted of rainbow gravel and glow in the dark accessories. He told me he wanted a more of a natural look kind of like my current 29 gallon. So I went to Walmart and picked up two bags of brown gravel. i also bought a big bottle of stress coat to dechlorinate the water. I added the new gravel and did a big water change. In the next couple of hours almost all of the cories were dead (only 3 survivors and they are BARELY alive. I switched them to my tank hoping I could save them) He also bought these seeds from walmart from the fish dept. that are supposed to sprout into plants??? It sprouted somewhat and spread these little white things everywhere! I am thining this is what killed the fish. I tested for nitrites and nitrates and got

nitrates-3
nitrites-0

What should I do? I am boiling the gravel and all the decorations and starting over the 10 gallon. :dunno: :dunno:

Nevermind...I think I know what happened. I cleaned all the gravel and cleaned the tank and I plugged everything back in and the filter won't work for some reason. I am thinking the filter broke and no one noticed it until most of the cories were dead. :-( 2 albino cories died and one green one is in my main tank now but he doesn't look like he will make it. :-( :byebye: Guess I will have to go buy another filter and start the cycle all over again.

Anyone know of any fish that are good with cycles and bettas? :dunno: The betta will be in a small fish bowl (about 1-2 gallons) until the tank cycles. Then he will be re-added to the cycled tank.

Is it a hang on back type of filter? You might just need to clean the impeller. I've got a couple of aquatech filters that are always a pain to get restarted. Sometimes it's just a matter of jiggling the intack tube to get the impeller reseated properly and then adding water to the filter to help it get primed.

prime the filter, and make sure the magnet is affixed to the shaft of the impeller, and fix your caps lock key while your at it.

Sheesh that was uncalled for. He only used caps in the title and I'm sure he did that on purpose to indicate how badly he needed help.

I just used caps because it was a total emergency! I left the filter plugged in lastnight and it is running this morning and the water looks great. Should I keep the cories in my 29 gallon for now and then let my little brother cycle his tank with some other types of fish? What kind of fish are good to cycle with and will be good with a betta? :dunno:

Check the ammonia if there's nothing wrong with it then: hydrogen peroxide everything and start again, put the betta in once the gravel has settled and just let him cycle the tank, one fish isn't gonna make enough waste to kill himself in a ten gal tank! The corys pribably died because of a sickness and I get the feeling that it's something internal... Anyway hope it helps, Flashfire.

One of the "surviving" green cories is sitting upright and not moving, but still breathing. He's been like that for a day or so. Should I euthanise him? I don't know what to do. :-(
