Hi,

I have a 55 gal reef tank. I already have various zoanthids, star and glove polyps, mushrooms, kenya tree corals, and torch corals. What other corals can be added to my tank without adding plankton. I currently add only two additives to my tank which was recommended by the LFS that has been in saltwater for over 30 years. They said that only calcium and corallife liquid gold plus is needed for non-plankton corals. They have a display tank that is setup for over 15 years with most corals 12 years plus old and the youngest is 5 years old. This tank has various corals in it that has always been healthy. I have shopped with them for 18 years on items other than saltwater items and know personally that the corals and setup is as old as they say it is. They preach that all the extra additives are mostly sale hype instead of actually needed. One of the saltwater specialist at the LFS has studied under the man that formulated the formula that is in the Corallife Liquid Gold Plus additive and has used it for years before Corallife bought the formula from the man. Of course they still recommend 10 percent water changes monthly using a good salt formula. So with this said I wish to keep a tank using thier method and need a list of available non-plankton or also called photosynthesis type corals. My tank has only been setup for 2 months but all corals are doing great and the zoanthids are multiplying. I was having a problem with coralline not doing well but once I tested and found phosphates were over 1.0, I treated and with phosphates under 0.1, the coralline is thriving. All other testing shows water is in good condition for addition of other corals. Any coral recommendations would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have a good LFS there :good:

What lighting do you have for your tank, and what about flowrate? These too are important when selecting corals ;)

I have 110 watts of T5 HO actinic and 110 watts of T5 HO 10K on this 55 gal reef tank. I have 1440 gph return from my sump. I have one 400 gph power head in front of my live rock and 900 gph powerhead behind my live rock. Its the right flow throughout the tank for glove and star polyps to sway and torch coral tenacles to sway with being beat against the live rock. Please give recommendations for additional corals that do not require plankton additive.

Pretty decent hardware there. I'd consider more Euphyllia genus corals like your torch (frogspawn, and hammer). Maybe other LPS like brains, open brains, acanthastrea, blastomussa, lobophytons, echinophyllia. You could also consider soft corals like leathers, sinularia, zooanthids, palythoa, mushrooms, xenia, clove polyps. Maybe even some easy sps like pocillipora and stylophora high up in the rock stack.

Skifletch,

Thanks for the list. You gave me several to research and hopefully add a couple.
