I use a utility knife blade

remember to clean of the oil for the blade 1st

Yeah, utility knife for the cheap version. I use a Kent Algae Scraper with the steel blade on mine. Works pretty well. Most magnetic algae scrapers wont do it, you have to the the rod/handle type.

I use an old Phone Card with the metal chip removed. It does a fine job.

we got it off with a stanley knife blade. just wanted it off the front and sides, happy for it to build up on the back tank looks loads better now.
