Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone could ID this coral for me.

Pic? SH

Looks like dendronephthya....a very difficult softie to care for. Considered experts, some people dedicate their tanks to try and keep these alive. SH

It should be there, I put it on attachments.

Well mine seems to be doing great at the moment.. i got it on friday along with some yellow polyps.

I have 2 T5 bulbs, one daylight and one Blue Moon atanic. 2 maxi-jet 400's. 14lbs of live rock 12gallons.
18inches on the depth.

The coral itself appears to be happy, when i bought it from the LFS. It wasnt opened out just shrunk down.
They told me they only got it the day before i bought it, so i thought i'd give the little fella a chance. But now Its little polyps on the sides are opened out and its reaching out for what it thinks is the sun.

Any care tips to keep it looking like this would be most helpful.

It is not photosynthetic..it must be fed or it will die. They are one of the most challenging corals to keep. I'm up and running pushing a year know...I would never consider buying one. SH

I know that now, ive been doing some research and it eats plankton and disolved organics..

Im always scraping algea from my glass. It may eat those particles, because everytime i do scrape the green stuff it usually floats on the top getting pushed around, but it never reaches the top anymore!

Algea filter or what.

thanks

matt

If your tank is a small one, just be careful. The amount of food necessary to keep it alive may add enough nutrients to your tank to cause algae blooms. Good luck with it and post back and let us know how you do with it. SH

Ive kept it alive so far and it looks happy still. i saw it crunched down in the LFS its never done that since its been in my tank.
I think not useing a skimmer on this tank is helping because using a skimmer would take out all the micro organics out of the water.
You can feed it on natural algea particles or you can feed them on a very fine plankton. Basicly either a green cloud or a red one.
It needs one ammount of ethier per day, and during the day if anything small enough gets near it, it will eat it.
Its grown alittle already.

In the wild they can grow up to a meter in height.
most of these speices grow upside down in caves, but light doesnt harm them.

If this is a coral for experts they should try harder..

Thanks

a lot of corals that grow upside down, do so for a reason. MAybe it is trying to get out of the light and it will eventually become stressed. Also some corals grow upside down because they cannot hold themselves up so they eventually collapse and die, just some things to think about

this coral is meant to be upside down and will not do as well if it is not. hang it in a relatively dark area, it does not like lots of light.
