ok so my dad works for a commercial reality company and to make a long story short over the weekend when they turned off the air/heating in one of their buildings as they always do to save money(they still have it set though so that it does not go past 85 or under 60 or something) and one of the fans malfunctioned causing the temp in the buildign to rise to about 90 degrees F. On the floor that the malfunction occured they had a 250g reef tank filled with live coral and when they came into the building on monday they found their tank at 92 degrees F and they want my dad to pay $7000 to replace all the coral. Now my question is at what temp would the coral die and for how long would the water have to be at that temp for the coral to die. Im not sure what kind of coral it was but im guesing maybe sps because of the price. what about lps though just in case.

ANY answers greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!! ASAP

i dont know at what temp they die but under 84 is what i call safe.

in any case if they were that worried about there corals.... especially in a "comercial building" they should havehad a chiller. that way there safe from air room temp rises. JMO if i had $7000 worth of corals id have one no doubt

Why the hell does your dad have to pay to replace them? That sounds like a bunch of scapegoat bull#### to me.

I, personally, wouldnt let my tank water rise above 80 Farenheit. I would imagine Acropora sp. or other SPS coral would very quickly die if the temperature got past 84 or so. Just look at the great barrier reef incident.

The tank should be suitablly cooled without relying on air conditioning in the building. Why on earth didn't it have a proper chiller or individual air cooling system? Had your dad been previously informed that heat was an issue with the tank and so not to turn the air conditioning off in that part of the offices?

I'm sure we'd all be very upset if this happened to our own tank but you can't go around blaming it on other people? Who you gunna sue next, the weather?
