i have some base rock that i acquired quite a while back, i have just been checking it over and on a couple of the rocks there is a very faint hint of pale bluish staining do you think this could be residue from a copper based treatment by it's previous owner and is there any way of testing this. it's too faint for me to photograph i think but i will try, i am going to try contacting the previous owner by email if i can find his email address but don't hold much hope on that front as i religiously delete old emails, would appreciate some help on this......... kevin

It really is not worth the risk - stick it in a holding tub for a week with heat/powerhead and then test

+1 good idea although I wouldn't even consider using it if I had any doubt.

Is the rock porous by any chance?

its white ocean rock, so its not very porous at all, due to my doubts about it i don't think i'll use it

Doubt it's copper I treated marine ich with cupramine in my QT and the water stays normal colour.

If anything it will be a staining from something like malachite green IMO.

yeah thats what i thought, its a real shame really because there are some fantastically shaped rock

You can get some more mate it's not to pricey that stuff!

My LFS is getting some Tongan Branch Rock at the end of the month he showed me pics and it looks amazing - pricey but well worth it.

Something for you to think about :)

Why get reef bones when you can pick up live rock for £5 a kilo?
live rock seems in very short supply oop north seffie, am always on the look out on ebay and when i was at the abyss last weekend saw plenty interesting shaped bones that i can seed myself

Are you sure it's Ocean and not Live? I have some LR that has blue edges but can't remember the name, it's a particular type and looks really blue in places. Personally I don't get the jips about Ocean Rock, I know it does nothing for filtration so you can't figure it into your maths for "do I have enough rock" but when I took the Ocean Rock out of my nano, it was teeming with life, and there were hundreds of Pods in it. I have used it as a base for the piles on my 5ft to hopefully act as pod central.

Pm'd you something that may be of use mate.

thanks for the reply george, i'm pretty sure its ocean rock, and i feel exactly the same as you re: rock, it was always my intention to use this stuff purely for "bulking up" and felt pretty certain that although its not as porus as live rock, nature would eventually take over and it would become colonised in time, and wouldn't be used in calculating the amount of LR i would eventually need. as i said in my original post its a very faint and i beleive it to be a stain rather than natural colouring and affects just two, one of which was my favourite piece  i will scour my pc for pics of the stuff that i took when i first obtained it

Edit..... just took these pics and i think the stain is visible in the photos

I really want these rocks in my tank (well the unstained ones that is) but i'm not one of those people who when given advice on here just goes ahead and does what they always wanted to do in the first place
