Are these ok to keep in pairs? My LFS have them in at £6 a pair and i dont fancy paying £21 for a decent group.

Yeah, these are one of the few tetras that can be kept in pairs or in groups. A pair will display the same bahaviour as they would in a group.

Was there anything in particular that attracted you to them?
completley unusual species :look:
they look very similar to the native pike from a distance.
I never saw them as Pikes, TBH I just saw them as long brown fish so they didn't interest me much, so I was curious to find out why you wanted to buy them. But yeah, I'm seeing them in a new light now :X :D

I'd love a group myself but it would cost me £18 for 6 of 'em is a bit steep as i reckon my gourami may take a fancy to them

You won't find them much cheaper than £3 each, one of m LFSs charges £5 each

Well its a good price, just not a bargain price, the LFS I went to yesterday had these for £3.50 each. You'll probably be better off be getting a pair 1 male and 1 female. ;)

i would have thought 3 would make breeding easier? they're adult fish and extremley easy to sex, so i could pick 1m 2f?

Either way, from my research, they breed better in large groups of pairs, so if you get a trio, 2 will pair up and the other one will be a bit 'wasted'

Its amazing how websites can portray very different profiles...
"The species is incredibly peaceful but doesn't make an ideal community species due to its small adult size. It's easily intimidated by larger tankmates, and will not compete well for food with them. Keep it alone or in a community of other small, placid fish, such as Corydoras, other similarly sized tetras, pencilfish or small freshwater shrimp. It also makes a good dither fish for many species of dwarf cichlid. Keep it in a group of at least 6-10 fish, as it prefers the company of its own kind."

versus

"A peaceful fish that can be kept in pairs or schools. Does well in a community tank."

They cannot both be right!
