I am looking to install something like this above my reef to cool the tank. At the moment the 150w halide above raises the tank temperature to 29 deg C, how can i calibrate the fans to come on when the temp gets too high?

any help much appreciated!

thanks
tom

It doesn't look like this fan has a temprature controller build in, so you will need a temprature controlled switch to switch the fans on and off

any chance of a link to one of these?

thanks paula

we were having issues with the temp of our SW tank, also form the 150w metal halide, we came up with a much cheaper easier solution. Ventilation. Ian drilled big holes on the top of the lid on either side of the light, and on each end of the hood, the hot air goes out the top holes drawing cool air in through the side holes, now the temp never rises above 28oC :good:

the sides are totally open to our tank as it is a shelving system, right now the temp is 28 but it can go to 29. The office is air conditioned but it isnt the most reliable system and people tend to turn it off when the office gets too cold (which could be 5 minutes after it is turned on)

Could i keep hard corals in temps of 28-29? Particularly acropora's...

OK fair enough. Don't know enough about coral's to help with that then sorry, just started with marines!

I would say 29 is a bit on the high side to keep corals. I have found a temperature controller for you, I don't know how DIY you are but here's a clear instruction on how to build one: Temperature Controlled Fan
You could also get a cheap thermostat and use that to do the switching.
