On that website the guy reckons he's got an undergravel filter but he's got 'Osio sand' as substrate, can you have sand on an undergravel filter ?

No you can't, because it defeats the whole purpose of an UGF, but by the looks of it, he has gravel, maybe its just the name of of the gravel suppliers?
