hello , ok i am starting a new 10 gal. tank with convict babies i need info on how many i can put in this tank i know they grow fast so won't have to many to long .. also what colors can i get when they grow up.. already have one that changed colors on me.. and i need to know what else i can put in with them .. i know now not ghost shrimp are not it..lol :(
i bought five two days ago and even though they are only babies they eat all but one. unless my cat fish eat them.. ?

you can safely put 5, as long as they are still babies under 1.5inches.

I would not put anything else in with them in such a small tank.

Convicts vary in color. Mine is dark grey with black stripes and orange on the belly and near her fins.

I;ve seen some which were white with black stripes.

Depends where you get em.

If they haave orange on the belly though its most definately a female.

there are two variations of convicts archocentrus nigrofasciatus or barred convict and cichasoma nigrafasciatum pink convict. the barred convict has vertical dark stripes while the pink is almost white in color a very pale pink. as the fish matures sexually, the females will get an orange coloring on the belly area which will grow the nearer she gets to laying the eggs. they like to lay the eggs on a flat surface and in a cave or some other kind of secluded area. convicts are great parents. the parents and previous spawns do not require to be moved after the new spawn hatches.

when convicts are ready to spawn you will notice them cleaning the entire area. they will take peices of gravel and grind them in their mouths to get rid of any algae. convicts do lay eggs. each spawn can be from 200-250 eggs each. the female will lay the eggs while the male guards them. the eggs will be yellow in color turning to clear with a tiny black spot in the middle when they are ready to hatch. hatching takes about 4-5 days. if the eggs turn white they are unfertilized and will be eaten. the female and male will guard the fry and keep them in their cave until they are larger. you may notice what looks like poofs of dust in the mouth of the cave, these are the fry. if the female feels the fry are being threatened she may move them. she will take several into her mouth and release them to a different area.

you need to consider the adult size of the fish when choosing a tank for them. if you are going to keep them in the 10 i would not suggest more than a pair. don't suggest the 10 either. once they start to spawn, they can do so every 6 weeks. convict fry are hard to sell since they are so common. breeders and other fishkeepers will keep pairs of convicts for live food for their fish.

well babies wise u could put about 8 or 9 but wheb they grow maybe onli 4 because mine where aggresive in my old 4ft malawi tank, i had 5 yellow labs and 5 electric blues a breeding pair of the large zebra cichlids 2 manags and the 2 breeding convicts now my friend has 2 females and 1 male of mine in his 3 ft tank and they breed every so we go halfs with the fry.

that is a really nice looking tank. unfortunately, bad cichlid tank. cichlids besides need to establish territories. even though this is a larger tank, there is not alot of area for them to be able to do so. you need to consider the footprint of the tank. the footprint is the bottom area of the tank. with the hexes there is not alot of footprint.

would be okay for angels though. could possibly have one pair of convicts. any more convicts and there is going to be alot of fighting going on in this tank.

well, i will think about what you all have said and thank you, as for the convicts i already have them as i said once before they are in my community tank i have to get them out but they are still babies maybe try given them to a friend before they get to big..
