Hi there...
Heres the situation so far...I have a breeding pair of convicts and was doing a water change ( high nitrite ) and noticed That they finally laid eggs...i didnt notice at first because they were on the leaf of a artifical plant i have....Now there were between 300-400 eggs on the first day...She was doing the usual fanning over top of them...by the second day the brown and white eggs were notcieably different and she seemed to be eating them...Probably about half remained by the end of the second day....Now today all of them are gone...not a single one remains...but they have started makin a large hole in the gravel next to a piece of PCV piping i have...Now i was wondering...

1. could a rise in my nitrite level affect the eggs?

2. Should i not do anymore water changes while there are eggs in the tank?

I hope i can get some help with this....i want some little swiggleys :D

the eggs probably had fungus on them.. thats why parents ate them... convicts are usually good parents...

doing water changes often triggers the laying of eggs...

maybe avoid it this time and see what happens..

300-400 eggs is a lot, mine laid eggs yesterday but theres only like 30 that i can see.....

good luck

It takes the fish a few times to get it right. They probably sensed something was wrong so they ate them. It happens and isn't anything to be alarmed about, in fact i'd give it a month or so and you'll have so many fry you won't know what to do with them. I've heard horrible stories about people just dumping them out on the street because they have no where to put them and LFS don't take them readily.

A close friend of the family owns a local Ifs and said that as long as they are healthy he has no problems takin em...plus i wanted to see if i could maybe feed a few to the fish in my 65 gal tank ( sorry if thats a mean thing to say ).
Thnx for the replies...you guys have helped alot :D

Thats good you have that connection. I would also use them for food for larger fish. Nothing wrong with that IMO. Good luck!!

Could they be used as feeder's for Tiger barbs/Pictus catfish...1 have another 3 pictus on the way for 5 total and have read that they eat smaller fish....i was thinking of getting a breeding net and keeping some of them there and try feeding them...think itll work? :p ( i feel bad with this topic.. :-( )

i use them as feeders as well, just make sure they dont hide and grow up

100% possitive...they filled a broad leaf top to bottom with eggs..and im pretty sure they lay more than fifty eggs...maybe 300-400 is a bit much...but there was WAY more than fifty -_-

ive heard of big convict batches of eggs...

even guppies would eat the baby cons... so im sure anything else would..

not that i condone it :S
