hey all, new today and i got a few questions.

first, how do you tell male and femal convicst apart? i have one and am lookin to purchase another for breeding.

Second, i just added two south african kirbensis to my tank, and i think they might be breeding, becuase the first few days they were all happy in there cave, and now one wont let the other near the cave.

and finally, What would be some good fish to add to this thirty gallon tank with:

3 cory cats
2 kirbensis
1 convict

Female cons will have red on their chest. In a 30g tank with a breeding pair of cons, I wouldn't add any of those fish. Chances are good they will all be killed especially since none of them know and understand territories.

If you want breeding cons in a 29g I would leave it as those 2 and some target fish like zebra danios or any otherfish that you know beforehand will probably be killed.

I'll move this to NW.

I just added these two Purple Cichlids AKA. Kirbensis, and they seem to be very happy under there rocks, always avoiding convist. and my 3 cory cats ar enot at all bothered by him either. But im sure as soon as i ry and breed them things will stir up. Know anything about purple Cichlids?

honestly... i dun think the term 'purple cichlids' would help as i think its due to the ignorance of the fishkeeper its named that way. if it isnt its my ignorance then :p and yes convicts do get aggressive

Well, if you add another con and they want to breed, they will almost for sure kill the kribs without a doubt.

Pelvicachromis pulcher (kribensis) are African cichlids and the males get up to 4" and females about 3". Tanks should be heavily planted and contain a lot of caves and cover. They like floating plants also. You can feed them flakes and pellets with some frozen foods thrown in like brine shrimp.

LOL, yea, I just found out last week that pulcher is also called "purple cichlid". I never heard of that before otherwise I would have been like wtf!?

And the color the females get on their bellies is orange not red. Males will have some blue coloring, but no orange.

And really, you should take everyones advice about not putting those other fish with a breeding pair of convicts, the kribs & cories and anything else that are in there will get pulverized once they pair up.
