Wow, I had to move 5 convicts to my guppy tank and so far all is well. The convicts are 6 weeks or so and all ages of guppies......I'm cycling another tank now for the convicts.....my question is simple. FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE do any of these fish stop with the lovin??? I started with one tank and now starting my 6th one up....have mercy!

The Convicts will eventually live up to their name and you won't have any of those guppies left. I love Convict cichlids but if you have a pair you will get overrun . If my information is right they are the only fish that the female is more colorful and prettier than the male. They don't seem to need to pair off either. Any two will mate. The female seems to insist on it. Every time I walk by them in a shop there is always a pair digging a nest or guarding a nest. Now , try offing those fry somewhere. Nobody wants them.

I can now understand how I was able to aquire this big octagon tank with all the fish and entire setup w/so many extras.........for $40. I can't wait until Christmas because everyone I know is getting stocked aquariums this year.....not to sound harsh but are convicts ever used for feeders?? I can't imagine how with those little faces. They're awfully smart I think..

Dude... you chose to get guppies, and convicts - two species of fish famously known for being breeding machines that never stop... what did you expect to happen?? ;)

I'm sorry if this is just a joke, but I can't tell whether you're joking or not, and some people really would do this, so I have to give the precaution - please, please, don't ever give living creatures as surprise gifts. At Christmas, or at any time. It's not fair to the fish, since the gift recipient didn't sign up to have them, might not know how to care for them, and the fish wind up suffering as a result. They will also soon be overwhelmed with fry if they do keep your "gift", and the problem continues. It's not fair on the people you're dumping them on either. They didn't sign up to be a pet owner, and now have a responsibility, not a present.

Talk to your local fish stores and see if they're willing to take your youngsters, or the breeding parents if you've had enough of having all the fry. Advertise private sales through the BAND ap or local online ad places like Craigslist, talk to other hobbyists and see if you can rehome fry or breeding parents that way- but don't dump them on people as "gifts".

Think before you buy a fish (or whatever animal for that matter)...
But you're not the only one to be honest. There are so many people that buy animals impulsively. It's a part of a learning curve a lot of us have been through...

Convicts as feeders ? There ain't no way possible ! Ounce for ounce there is no meaner or tougher little fish around. Any other fish that tries to eat even the smallest Convict cichlid is going to know he's been in a fight.
And besides all that , if you have ever handled one they are rough and scaly like a pinecone, not soft bodied at all , and their fin rays are like little knitting needles. What fish could eat that ?
