Thanks guys

here is what he gave me

1/2" thick glass tank approximately 94" long x 20" high x 18" deep. Stand and hood made of black and white Formica laminate. Base has three doors for storage with a duplex outlet on each side. Power cord and plug for 120 volt wall outlet. Hood includes 4- (48"long) florescent bulbs with dimmer switch. 2 Eheim brand Filters included. One is about five years old (pictured); the second is still in the box. It has not been used before. The box says Eheim Professional II on the box. Model # is not known.

can this filter be used for saltwater? what else would I need? also heaters and other things you would recommend.

Canister filters can be used and are very good for adding flow and for supplimental chemical filtration. LR should still be your primary filtration :).

Two things to ask before you even seriuosly consider this:

What livestock do you want to keep in a tank that big?
Has the tank ever been medicated before?

Many medications (especially parasite meds) contain copper which will leech into the silicone seals of a freshwater tank. Copper is lethal to inverts at very low concentrations so if the silicone is contaminated and leeches copper back into your system, you could have a problem with your invertebrates. If the previous owner doesnt know if he/she used copper based meds, just inspect the seals. If they look clear or sky blue they're fine... If they look like oxidized copper (color of the statue of liberty) then they're comprimised.

right ive used interpet aqua snail stuf in my tank but only ever used one dose. also my seals do not look the colour of the statue of liberty. is there any sort of stuff you can put in to just make sure. (my tank is freshwater at the mobut changing it for christmas)

You should be fine. If the seals get copper in them, it WILL oxidize and it WILL look like that blue of the statue of liberty. no need to test :)
