Hi all. I purchased some frozen fishfood (bloodworm/daphnia/mysis mix) blocks recently and my fish seem to love them. HOWEVER, I have some 10 week old platys in the tank who can't stop themselves from gorging on the blood worms, but then seem to become constipated afterwards. Last week, one of the fry was vibrating in the water trying to pass faeces. I'm worried I may be doing more harm than good. Was that just a one off or shouldn't I be giving them blood worms? And, what alternatives could I consider?

Tank consists of 3 adult platy, 2 platy fry, 1 plecco, 3 dannios.

Hey Lucy,

So long as its not all they get.

Quality flake with the frozen stuff as a treat should be ok now,

What other tankmates?

Your fry can actually choke on bloodworm. Fish by natue will eat anything that's edible. However they don't know that some foods will kill them. Your fry should be fed with either shop bought fry food or you could crush some greens tablet with flaked food again crushed to fit in small mouths. What I would tend to do is place the fry food in the tank first and then as the food starts to sink, put in the bloodworm. That way the fry has a chance to have their food first. You will find the other fish in your tank after the fry food, but if you observe a lot of the fry food will pass out through the gills back into the tank. That way your fry shouldn't become constipated. In a healthy tank, no fish should show signs of any maladies. Constipation in fish is a sign of incorrect feeding, all you need to do is adjust the feeding to suit the tankmates.
