Hi All.

I've been reading some of the topics... firstly I read Golfish in tanks, and then I read Types of Goldfish.

Now, I've known since coming on this site that goldfish are actually meant to grow HUGE and not be kept in tiny bowls like the fair people will have you think (hook a duck, win a fish... my childhood of fish rescuer summed up). However, on the Goldfish in tanks thread, it states 20US gallons for the 1st fish, but also states 15+ inches. Then I read on the Types of Goldfish thread that Ranchu and Lionheads get to 8 inches.... Does this mean I can keep one in a smaller tank? I'm not saying I WILL, so please don't flame me. It's just a bsic enquiry. I'm not doing well with my tropicals :'( and so I'll see how I go with my remaining ones, and if need be I'll get myself a cute little shrimp cube and decide what to do with my 10gallon (although if I decided to get a goldfish I'd obviously buy a big enough tank).

With goldfish you are always going to get a difference of opinion, with extremes at either end often being suggested, and Personally having worked in a LFS for 10 years I have often had to compromise on my beliefs in order to be fair to the fish being sold but also to bring in sales.

Therefore IMO a tank of 48L would suitably house one fancy type goldfish, (with for lack of a better description) the more deformed species like Pearscales and bubble eyes be more suitable as mostly they tend to not reach sizes of more than 5".

However like I say to my instore customers, there are always other options for a none-heated setup. A pair of American flag fish, a single male Paradise fish, a small group of female Platys or a group of WCMMs could all work in this kind of setup

Yes, 25 gallons would be good enough, BUT, only for babies. I mean, if it's the biggest you could do for them, YES. But if you could add a few more gallons, something around a 35 would be nice. I learned this from another forum. Folks there told me one adult should be kept in AT LEAST a 25 min. Just know that they poo a lot, you should get a filter for a tank that's bigger than a 25. :) Good Luck!:D
