i am going to get a tank just for either crabs/fan eating shrimp or a crayfish.

i have read lots about crabs but i'm a little confused, varies lfs have said true fesh water crabs exist and they will be fine in freshwater. from what i have read freshwater crabs needs brackish water and land mass.

can shrimp be kept with any type of crab?

can the large fan shrimp be kept with small shrimp like cherry etc.

cheers

"fan" shrimps wont harm anything at all.
Crabs and crayfish are able to eat each other so i don't think you'll be able to keep shrimp with them for long.
Shrimps are faster than crabs and crayfish so they might survive for some time but they'll eventually get eaten.

There were some guys keeping some crabs of ebay about 1-2 years ago that were freshwater and non-predatory look back through the forum search

thanks for the info, after hours of digging i've found them

pics of micro crabs

they look really cool and should be fine with shrimp and fish. now just got to find somewhere that sells them!

cheers

most, commonly sold crabs are brackish. Redclaw, and Fiddler. not only that, they are land crabs. needing more land than water. you will find a crab named, Rainbow crab. it lives in freshwater, but needs brackish to breed. its also a monster, needing to be kept on its own. they attack anything, including implements pocked in the tank. oh, and its a land crab too. so none are, best, kept with fish. or shrimp.

I guess you could keep Vampire shrimp with cherry/ghost shrimp, though.

(uk legal) Crayfish live in freshwater , though they are happy in water up to 5ppt salt. my experience says that (uk legal) Australian Redclaw crays are happy enough with Redclaw crabs. both are, predominantly vegetarians, but actually omnivorous.

these micro crabs are just freshwater and are fully aquatic, they are small but will add interest to the tank.

i did not realise the vampire shrimp got so big. i think this is what i saw in my lfs at the weekend, they called them filter shrimp.

i think i'm going for a vampire shrimp, 6 micro crabs, assortment of smaller shrimp (might go for tiger shrimp rather than just cherry).

will also add 6 of the same species small fish, maybe some killfish.
