Heya, well my sister recieved an email with a picture attatched off her friend, she opened it and the computer went insane, had loadsa internet windows popping up everywhere, and also it added 3 icons to our desktop, jj, kk and something else forget what, well the computer froze 2 times, so we had to do emergency shut down, after 2 attempts i finally fixed the computer i dunno what happened.

I had to delete MSN messenger then completely re-install it, tis working fine and dandy now, does anyone know what may have caused this to happen? maybe a virus trying to attack or something???

Did her friend definitely send the attached picture?

boy do i know this one!! my wife lives on Messenger, and second life. there seem to be loads of free stuff, like icons pictures, little programs to allow you to edit and then send stuff via Messenger, and most if not all are full of spyware, trojans and the like. but this time it looks like the picture is reacting to something already on your computer, but that is just a guess.

end result is a ban on all theses Messenger add-ons. and i have stopped using it at all, moving to outlook express.

a good fire wall and anit virus helps loads, though Norton would not be my choice as it is as full of this #### as Messenger.
i now use Comodo fire wall pro (free atm) and AOL anti virus shield (free too). both are a step up from the norm, whilst not totally fixing the problem, life is a lot better now. a move to Firefox as a browser helps too.

There was definatly a picture attatched according to me sisters friend. My computer is a bit dodgy, it has done this before where it throws out aloada internet windows. Tis a pain int backside. Even a friend who works with computers didn't know what the heck was going on.

I think we need a different security provider, but never mind, i'm just hopin we don't get a virus.

Ok, shall tell me mam bout it, tis her computer... but she doesn't have a clue how to work it lol, i'm basically the one who sorts it out went it messes up.

I find a secure Operating System the best preventative measure...
;)

Linux Lover ;)

BTW.. i have downloaded and installed XUbuntu. Turns out the desktop is having a few memory problems, so I have ordered some dead cheap memory to do the job..

and.. i have already found some drivers for my wireless dongle which was one of the main reasons for moving across.. so thanks for the tip andy...

Cheers

yep it it was your computer, I'd say at least try Linux (the latest Ubunu or Fedora are great).

Otherwise I would say you either need to spend some time yourself sorting it out, or pay for someone to clean the computer. I also would NOT do any financial transactions on this comp till you have sorted it out. As there may be other software floating around that doesn't make its presence so obvious.

virus checker: AVG (free)
Firewall: Zonealarm (free)
Adware/spyware: Spybot search and destroy (free)

just my 2p

i'm not sure if i'm allowed to post the link here but if you want to know a good website for finding free ant virus/spy ware etc pm me

Google "Trillian". It is a much better messanger. I can log into MSN, AIM, Yahoo, IRC, IQC, and a bunch more WITH NO ADS!!!
