can violet gobies get along with tetras and guppies? I am looking for a eel thing or an invertabre that can be kept in a 55 gallon aquarium along with tetras, guppies, and other small breeding fish....and i also nedd Ideas if my current plan is good for a 55 gallon aquarium or should I move to bigger fish? and what kinds. thankyou~PLEASE REPLY! :alien:

Some sites will tell you that violet gobies aka dragon gobies will eat small fish but IMO this is rubbish. They have huge mouths with what look like teeth protruding from the front of the jaw but are actually filter feeders which feed by taking in gulps of water and filtering the water through the gill rakers to sieve out tiny particals of food. We have one in a 55 community with small fish and have never had one eaten, the goby struggles with large bloodworms let alone being able to swallow fish. This is where the tricky biy comes in, since they are filter feeders they are difficult to feed and need special care to keep alive. They will not take pellet or flake foods and will need to be fed small live or frozen foods every day, daphia, brineshrimp, black mosquito larvae, glassworm and bloodworms will all be eaten.

CFC

Are Dragon Gobies The Grey/Purple ones with long bodies and spikes along their backs.

Have seen a few and they are very cool looking.

LFS said they were predatory, but if they are filter feeders would they get on with my fish.

Yes that sounds like them, they would get along fine with your fish but you may have problems feeding them since they are not the quickest fish to come out to feed, as long as you target fed it and made sure it got some food daily it would be fine.

One other thing to watch is that their are two species which look near enough identical but one is a brackish fish, be sure to check what water your lfs is keeping theirs in before buying one.

coool, will check with the LFS, Forgot to see how much they were.

I can Use A turkey baster to jet food infront of them, can't I??

You don't need bigger fish, The only time when getting bigger fish is good for the fish is when the fish will be with an agressivefish and violet gobies are not agressive. Infact Agressive fish seldom have spines (with the exeption of ambush predators) spines are defensive and when you have a good aufence you dont need a good defense.
