So absorbed by my reef tank, forgot a basic. Setting up a 15G community tank for my kid, who wants an angelfish. Are there any that are safer than others with tetras, a gourami, a couple platies, etc? Or are they all ok (or not ok)?

Maybe one of the angelfish experts will be along shortly, I'm not one. :/

However, I think 15 gallons is either scraping the bare minimum for an angelfish, or too small altogether (again, hopefully an expert can advise). Full grown angels are pretty big, but also very "tall". Keeping an angel in a tank less than 18 inches deep is strongly discouraged.

Well, I'm not really an EXPERT, but I do have angels. Yes, 18" is the minimum tank height for angels, and tank volume should be at least 10 gallons per fish.

There are varying stories on whether angels and neon tetras can live together in the same tank w/o the angels devouring the neons. Rumor has it, neons are the angels natural food in the wild. Don't know about other tetras or gouramis. I'd say platys are a-ok (the angels would love to eat their fry). Unfortunately, I don't think your tank is big enough! :(

Angelfish and neon tetras can get along together when they are small. Unfortunately, when the angelfish get bigger, the neons will start looking like a nice meal to the angelfish.

The tank is a 15 high. Sorry bout that. Easily tall enough. So, I'm hearing no on neons but maybe the pristellas would work.

Are there dwarf angels that are freshwater that would work?

18" tall is considered the minimum hieght for an angel fish, so 15" is very definatley not "Easily tall enough".

I would never consider putting my angels into my smallest tropical tank which is in fact bigger than what you are proposing.

Do you mean 15 gallon high? If it's at least 18 inches high, the height is OK. Although I would not overlook the 1 angel per 10 gallon rule. So if your 15 gallon is at least 18" high, you're limited to one lonely angel in that tank.

Ah, it never occured to me he might mean 15gallon high! Still, I don't imagine a tank of that size being 18" high and I still don't think 15gallons is big enough to house an angel comfortably, and by quite a big margin.

Maybe it's just because I am aware of exactly how big they get because of mine.

15 high 20X10X18.

But I am heavily persuaded that the tank is too small for an angel. Now to convince my kid...

That's why I was asking about dwarf angels...

I don't think there is such a thing, there are obviouly some that don't grow as big as others, but I don't know about breeds to be honest.

There is a species called the Leopoldi angel which is smaller in body than Scalare and Altum, but its very rare and I dont think it has spawned in captivity yet. That means wild fish who would be delicate and really wouldnt appreciate being put in a 15g. 30G bare minimum for Angels IMO, 18" high at least.

For a 15G, Kribs or apisot pairs would do ok, if they have plenty of caves, they might spawn for you too :)

Based on what I know about angels - which admittedly, isn't an awful lot - I believe you have hit the indellible truth on the mark.

Poor kid. :/

As Ken has said there is a species called Leopoldi which is smaller than the other two species. However, IMO only a 20g would suit these and for the common Scalare and slightly rarer Altum I would only advise 30g preferable 40g if you want quite a few other fish. I saw two Leopoldi at the lfs a while back, however, I think they had cross bred with another species as they didn't look quite right to me, they seemed to have the tall body of the Altums. I would stick to a general small community tank for your 15g Angels are to big for that tank.
