Common Pleco

Ive just got myself a "common pleco" and after reading on the internet about them it says they can grow huge but on the discription in the shop it was called a common algae pleco and its max size was 10CM, also mine looks nothing like the pictures on the internet tbh it looks more like a clown pleco. At the moment its only about 2-3 inches. im a bit stumped with this guy i might have to go back to confirm its ID but im 100% sure the tag said common algae pleco. Is there different sub species of the same type? because this one looks nothing like the internet shows

could do with a picture. i can find no comments on an "common algae eating pleco". just the common, though that covers more than one species, these guys grow to, anywhere between 12 and 24 inches. my common looked black and white till it grew a bit then it took on the more known colouration. also the substrate that the fish is against, has a marked effect on common pleco colours.
