How fast do common plecos grow I have one and one of my friends is going to take it and put it in his 55 gal tank its in a 29 gal how long before i should give him away

Hi fish_r_great :)

Since you have already decided to give your pleco away, why not do it now? It's a very responsible and thoughtful thing to do and by giving him a bigger tank as early in his life as possible you will be increasing his potential to be all nature intended him to be. :D

Please be sure that your friend knows that at some point he will outgrow even the 55 gallon tank and will need to be moved to still larger quarters.

I was at a freinds house this week and saw 2 huge 8" plecos in a tiny 30 gallon tank. I was absolutly disgusted. Its wrong to keep them in tank that are that small. I think you could wait til he is 4" or 5" before you should give him away. But thats my opinion.

Having fish in a large tank from the start encourages them to grow faster as well. Although some fish simply grow fast or slow because of their species.

wELL like everyone eles advice is, do it now he should be fine for the rest of his life in there as long as he doesnt eat a TON, but could easily grow to big, i was at the pet store earlier and i seen a common plec and it scared me 22 inches long and 6 inches around  huge.

If your going to give it to your friend, then I would say go ahead and do it now also. Do it before you start to get attached to him. I got mine at about 3 or so inches long. When I finally took him out of my 55 gallon he was a little over 13 inches long! I didnt want to get rid of him, but I just had to. He was way to big for my tank. He is now in a LFS BIG display aquarium. They have an alligator, all kinds of turtles, and fish in there. So I still get to go see him. He is probably close to 18 inches now. They have another one in there that is a monster. Over 20 inches easy!

Here is my old Pleco. I miss seeing him everyday!

This is the the problem I have-- my tank is a 45 gallon tank and our pleco (which I've had since the beginning is starting to get to big for the tank)

And I will miss him, I think he will end up in the LFS Big tank

True about the "attached thing". When I first got my convicts I didn't care for them much, but later I though they were kind of nice. I originally planned for them to be taken away 2 months later but after that I was quite attached to them. I eventually did give them away, but it was hard. Fish are like real people when you think about it. They are trusting on you to keep them alive basically. Although they don't realise it, it's true, and you start to see them in a different light. B)

This afternoon I asked my LFS if they would take him back (where we bought our common pleco) they don't have any room for him -_-

Found a new home for him
