They had a sale on Plecos today and since I have a soft spot for these guys I picked one up. He's about maybe 4 inches big right now. He looks a lot different from my current common pleco. Anyone know for sure if he's a common pleco or another type? Also I have them both in seperate tanks right now, would it be a good idea to put them together or no? I decided I'd ask first instead of taking the risk.

The new guy, named him Puffy

He also has reddish eyes and a light bump on his nose that isn't visable in the picture, it may just be a scar or nip, not positive

Huffy has spots, and is really hard to get a good pic of.

Hmm he looks too young to judge, pretty certain he is a common however still a tiny bit of doubt whether he could be a sail fin!,
How big is your tank?

The new guy (puffy) is in my 55, my huffy lives in my 20. Once Huffy gets bigger he'll move into the 55 too, for now he does a great job cleaning up the algae.

He looks like a common.. Its hard to tell from the pictures but yeah definatly looks like a common..

I would ID it as a sailfin. That doesn't mean I'm right however.

Yeah they're not the best pictures. Thanks for you help though everyone. I guess he's a common; possible sailfin. I never knew two commons could look so different.

Im also gonna say he's a sailfin, unless you have a 100gal+, it would be best to rehome him if hes a sailfin which i think he is.
Common plecs can get quite grouchy towards each other as they mature and can have disputes over terotory and food, somtimes they get along fine though, either way its risky- if you have just one common plec, i would try to keep it to that  .

not too young at all - Its a Gibby (Sailfin)

should be ok in a 55 for a good while yet.

Thank you smithrc. I looked up Pterygolichthys gibbiceps and I'm pretty sure that's what he is. My new guy looks just like the gibby sailfin pictured below, but with less coloration but I it says that the color improves w/ age. My guy also has the "Prominent nuchal crest. Large nasal flares." said to be common w. the species. I found the info here ~~> http://www.scotcat.com/factsheets/g_gibbiceps.htm, but the pic below was on a few different websites.

This one in the pic even has the same bump on the nose that I described on my sailfin

P.S. I was also worried about the "Prominent nuchal crest" before I knew what that was by researching I thought my guy was just too skinny. Glad to know he should be fine. Thanks for all the help here.

you'll need to put the picture on the web somewhere - there are site that let you do this..

then you link to it using the [ img] tags... Start a new thread though ;)
