hi, so i have a common plec as they are called, which i understand need a lare tank which why im getting rid of it but my pleco also produces a LOT of POOP!!!! so i was thinking of getting a BN pleco, but first i'd like to know do the yprocuse as much poop as the common ones do?

What tank size do you have?
Bristlenoses poop as much as Commons.

if they are the same size then they will probably 'poop' just as much as each other, but a BN only gets to about 4 inches, whereas the common can get to two foot.....so you can imagine how much more poop a fish that size will produce.

Also does anyone know how to sex BN'? whats the most reliable? easiest?

thanks, pumh

Waste as mentioned above at equal size will usually result in roughly same amount, a common will get 3-4 times as big so waste at this point will be quite high in comparison.

Sexing BN is usually quite easy, males will get bristles female usually dont, if the female does get any then they will only be on the lip area where male bristles will continue up the nose region and with age branch off.

Sexing usually can be done at 2.5-3 inches positively but some males if more than one in the same tank could be just a slow developer and less dominant.

okay thanks, if it's not too much f a problem can anyone post like comparison pictures of the different sexes?

thanks, pumh

on a side note, has anyone had success breeding BN's? i was under the impression breeding all catfish was almost imposible (at least for Average Joe)

Bristlenoses are actually quite easy to breed; I had a pair that bred in my community tank quite happily :)
Try googling 'bristlenose' or 'Ancistrus' and you should find plenty of pics of males and females to help you, although it may be harder to buy the right sex as the ones in shops are often too young to have developed their bristles!

IME there one of the easiest fish to breed apart from common livebeares. All you need as a male and female clean water and food and you will have fry mine have had hundreds in a community tank with no problem. There are loads of catfish that are fairly easy to breed.
Are you looking for some BNs? Im in thetford and have about 100.
