What is the best thing to feed my common pleco? At the minute he gets algae wafers, left over flake food, courgette and melon.

Should I also add catfish pellets to that?
Bloodworm or shrimp pellets?

If so can anyone recommend a good UK brand that I could use?

Thank you :)

That's a good basic diet. You could try adding JMC pellets.
All my plecs get JMC pellets, bought in large jars from Ebay. They love them - and so do most of my other fish from cichlids to goldfish who get them as a special treat.

Excellent thank you. I'll have a look for them :)

also as much fresh or tinned veg and fruit you can manage. in essence, as much fibre as you can get into it.

I've tried him with other veg but he doesn't like that much of it lol (he doens't like potato, carrot, apple or parsnip). But I'll experiment again when we eat it :)

mine usually gets leftover pellets from the fish, but twice a week or so i give him some proper catfish pellets, although they really cloud up the water! as for veg, i give him the tops and tails of whatever we're eating and if he doesnt eat them within a few days i fish (!) it out...
He agrees with yours, that parsnips are a bit to hard, but most other veg goes down well

lol I did even part boil them first.

He did attempt to eat them, as for the carrot he took one look and refused to even eat it lol

occasionally, i had luck with carrots when i slice them, thinly, lengthwise. I've never seen mine eat peas (thank god. it poops enough already :hyper: )

Oh tell me about it; when I move his boat to clean it's the only area of the tank that seems to get dirty! lol.

Hi There! I'm New to this forum but some of the info is great, was just wondering if you have any advice for me,

I have a Pleco Im not sure how old it is but ive only had him for 3 days now, he's about 3 inches and he's getting on fine. but. when i feed him algae wafers just after lights out you can see he starts to eat them, and obviously enjoys them, he also eats courgette and some times other food that falls to the bottom of the tank, when i wake up in the morning you can see he hasnt eaten any more than half. But recently Ive noticed him swim to the surface and grab a flake of food that the rest of the fish have left, is it because im not feeding him enough? because there seems to be lots of algae wafer left, or is it that he is just a catfish with exquisite taste, and likes them?
and advice would be greatly recieved

I have a large Gibby (16") and he still seems to prefer eating from the surface, he wont touch cucumber or any other veg if its on the bottom, I have to secure it to the side with suckers. He is a right odd bod

Mine won't touch anything if it's high in the tank.

I usually secure his veg with a chop stick so it sinks; but recently I bought a nice sucker hook for the side so I don't have to stick my arm in to remove it and would he touch it not at all...when I moved it to the bottom he ate it! Looks like I'm getting my arm wet for the forseable future.

I've just bought some JMC catfish pellets recommended by fishnovice and some bloodworm pellets for him as well (and my snails can have a small helping of it as well :))

i use some tongs that are a bit like litter pickers to pace my food in my tank when it needs to go somewhere specific, or if im getting something out.

how about those comedy ones that look like sharks heads with an opening mouth hahaha that would be quite amusing. :hyper:

thanks Very Much!
well i've started feeding him half a wafer every other night, because theres not loads of algae in the tank, but i also put in Courgette (zucchini) and a few other veg and he seems to be quite happy, hardly any leftovers from the wafers (although if there is, its not around for long as the snails clean any leftovers up) and he seems to be loving the veg. so much so that he will even come out in the light for a bit of courgette if he knows its there.

so thanks very much, and yes, i find some long tongs (the sort you have for disgorging hooks from sea fish and the like when you go fishing), these mean i can put veg and wafers in precisely where i want, and take any leftover veg out without having to put my whole arm in...

Thanks Again, ;)
