Hi I have what I beleiev is a common plec, and he has what looks like a dusty coating on his skin

He appears perfectly normal, and somedays it appears more than others, I noticed my LFS one of theirs had the same sort of coating, markings and wondered if it is normal

Here is a pic of him (but you can really see the dusty markings)

I am not an expert however I have read that catfish should have a "sheen" to them when they are healthy because of a thick slime coating......Perhaps an early indication of water quality or illness from a pathogen??

Take a flashlight, turn tank light off and shine it on pleco and if the dust glows or shines then its velvet. Also not a common pleco might be a leopard or spotted pleco.

I have tried with a flashlight now, and t doesnt glow, its very dull looking dusty, and its not complete covering, just in parts

I assumed it was a common plec, the shop only said plec on the label, whats the best way to ID my plec then

I will try and get some decent pictures of him, but its not that easy most of the time :)
