axolotls
some axolotl look like the mudpuppy and are smaller and are fully aquatic and have been bred in captivity for more than a hundres years. Axolotl are an ambystomid-which means they are a type of mole salamander(closely related to tiger salamanders) that stay in a neonetic form. This means they stay lookin like a mudpuppy for ever. If you see something labled as water dog, more than likely it is larval tiger salamander and more than likely will morph into a salamander.
there are great axolotl websites and boards out there if you have questions.
Better to get an axolotl than a mudpuppy for a pet, especially if you have concern for the status of mudpuppy.
here is a mudpuppy sheet

you can also get sirens/dwarf sirens, but they are usually wildcaught from Florida, from the ones I looked at.
