my poor betta has been battling fin rot since i brought him home from his filthy petstore jar several weeks ago. i've tried triple-sulfa, which did nothing, and aquarium salt + melafix, which seems to have slowed down the progress of the rot, but not completely stopped it.

as of this evening, i noticed several tiny white spots on my betta's body. i'm pretty sure he has ich, and i really want to start treating it immediately, but i need to know if the melafix is going to interfere with the ich medication? also, i'm going to be getting some maracyn soon for the tail rot since nothing else seems to work... is that compatible with ich medication like aquari-sol or quick cure?

if it isnt compatible, i'm assuming the ich needs to be treated first? if i'm wrong please tell me so.

please help... i need to start treating him as soon as i can, but i dont want either of his conditions to worsen. :(

Instead of maracyn, get Tetracycline. Mardel makes a good one.

To treat the ich, use maracide, also by Mardel. These can be used together with no harm to the fish.

Mardel products are made to be used with each other!!

Good luck.

One more thing,

Since the Melafix is little more than a tonic, it would be safe to use along with the Maracide/Tetracycline.

IMO though it is a waste as it will not cure finrot or Ich!!!

I'd have to disagree with that Melafix comment, somewhat. It helped fix my goldfishes' finrot. (Then again, it could have also been the water changes).

You should be able to treat the ich with high temperatures (around 80-85) and water changes. The water changes should also help the fin rot. The others gave good advice, though.

Oh yeah, most diseases in the tank are caused by or accelerated by bad water conditions, so you might want to look into that.

Would it be safe combining these two ick meds?

Why would you wnat to use two meds for the same disease/parasite? It'd be better to go with one and/or the other to see which one works (or works better) so you know which one to use and suggest to others.

As for negative effects, I wouldn't know.
