Hello, wondering if anyone can help...

We have a Red Honey Gourami that seems to have a problem with its mouth. Compared to the other Gourami's we have, it doesn't seem to be able to open its mouth as wide when eating food or going up for air. The skin around the mouth is fine, but its lips appear to be white and almost sort of flaking or rotting, like dead skin. I have read about something called Columnaris and wondered if this could be it? It is eating okay at the moment, but has trouble with bigger bits of food. We can't see any other symptoms, it is still alert and healthy looking apart from this. Water tests out good. Have put some Bacteria Control meds in for now. Any ideas what it is, and what can we do about it?

Yes a fish can get mouth fungus columnaris but once the mouth starts to look like its rotting away it usually to let, sorry.

Hi :good:

I believe my new rainbow fish has this (they are supposedly susceptible when new), at the moment it is just like a small white goatee and the fish is feeding fine in QT. So what is the best treatment? I am in the UK

TIA

Myxazin and pimafix, good luck.

Myxazin and pimafix, good luck.

Apologies do i need both of these? Also I have the Interpet finrot and antibacterial medication is not this suitable or as effective as these 2? Would adding salt (either cooking or aquarium salt) help?

TIA

Yes myxazin and pimafix.
Yes you can use the anti fungus and finrot it is for columnaris, but it not always strong enough on its own, depends on the strain of the columnaris but give it a go if you have it, its a seven days course, if there no improvement in 5 days with the med, i would change in the interpet anti internal bacteria med, good luck.
Adding salt to the tank depends on which fish you have in there as some fish won't tolerate it like scaless fish.

The interpet anti fungus seems to have had an effect since the bacterial growth has disappeared and fish is still eating so hopefully on the mend. They are in quarantine so i have kept an eye on them and I hope the 'success' was because it was treated quite quickly!

I planned to do a dose of anti-internal bacteria (i have interpet again!) after this anyway as a precaution so i will wait the 5 days you suggest, do a major (will 50% be enough?) water change and add that in...

Does that sound good? Also is it worth investing in myxazin and pimafix still? Thanks again :good:

If the interpet meds are working no don't need the other meds, before you add the bacterial med run some black carbon for a few hours before you add it, good luck.

Unfortunately where they are in QT they have a tiny filter so no room for carbon in it. Would I be ok just putting the carbon into the water for a bit or maybe 50% water changes in successive days?

Also, if i don't see enough improvement and go the myxazin and pimafix route do they contain instructions on how to use together or is it simply a half dose of both?

Thanks

Full dose of both if you have to use myxazin and pimafix.
Take the sponge out of the hospital filter can you keep it in a filter in another tank, chop some black carbon up so it fits thats all i do.

Thanks. Just 2 more questions:
1. I can't see any info on the pimafix/myxazin re: dosage for loaches. Will Kuhli loaches be ok with full dosage of each together?
2. My main filter has broken this morning (well unfortunatly during the evening so i don't know the likely damage to my bacteria colony). I have added extra aeration and have a second filter working in there (fully cycled but not big enough to support the tank fulltime). Should i still go ahead with medicating asap or try and give the filter replacement (which i will get today) a chance to build up?

TIA

Yes stat medicating if you have plenty of aeration, keep your sponges wet in some tank water if you have no other filter.

Hi Wilder, thanks for all the help so far :good:

I am day 4 of treatment and the columnaris bump appears to have lessened slightly and all the fish seem fine/eating well...

I have noticed though that you seem to advocate Waterlife products over the interpet ones. I plan to add some clown loaches to my QT when this is all over and have some interpet white spot med (since i know they are prone to it and i want to be prepared) am i best to get Protozin instead?
