I got a Candy Striped Pleco about a month ago. I've noticed that it's colour has dulled since I first got it. It's black stripes aren't as dark anymore. Is this normal?

i dont know much about those kinds of plecos but fish often pale in colour when they are unwell. are there any other signs of disease or sickness or stress?

on the other hand, my bn's and pleco change colour depending on where they are in the tank. if they are on the wood they are dark, if they are on the back of the tank which has a black background they are really dark. but then when they are on the bottom which is a sand substrate they are quite pale.

dont know if this helps at all :)

I agree with Fishlette. If he's eating ok and there are no signs of illness then I wouldn't worry.

He seems fine, he's active and eating no problem. He likes to spend a lot of time on a certain pale rock or on the sand so that could be why. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry then, Lym! If he's still active and eating then he's fine. They just like to give you a little scare now and again!

Yeah shouldnt worry about him. Mine also changes color. He is fine and healthy.

As candy striped plecos (also known as clown plecos) mature, their stripes will become a lot less distinctive looking as they mature, its pretty normal.

Candy Striped Pleco's are totally different from Clown Pleco's. See the links below if you don't believe me:

That's the problem with common names, clown plecs are also commonly known as candy striped - as are any striped plecs! Best to stick with L nos or latin names (if known) or even better - post a pic if you dont know ;)
