hi
have been thinking about setting up a new tank with some SA puffers. have done all the research BUT, today went to my local fish shop to get a new pump, whilst i was there was looking at the plants and what should be lurking there but a little SA puffer. the store owner didnt even know how he got there?? now i know u shouldnt buy a fish just cause u feel sorry for it.........but i was going to buy some anyway (when i get the new tank). question is..........and i have read different opinions.........but i trust u lot :D could i put him in with my female bettas for a while????? if u say yes i will dash back and get him...........if u say no, oh my goodness, not sure what i will do :(

You can move the females to a large glass or jar and the puffer into the tank, if the puffer doesn't grow too large for it and is truly a freshwater species.

No, you couldn't put the puffer into the same tank as your female bettas. He would definately kill them. You should ask the fish shop to save the puffer for you and make sure no one buys him, then set up a new tank, usuing your old filter, gravel, maybe a bit of water (although this won't really help as much as the filter media or gravel).

As a rule, no, they would not work together. How 'temporary' would this situation be, however? How soon will you be getting the new species tank for the SA? How large is the tank the female bettas are in now? How distraught would you be is the bettas are killed or significantly injured, either of which is a distinct possibility.

ok, so can't keep them even as a temp. measure together.......would not want my girls hurt. what if i divided my tank just for a few weeks. got a 180ltr tank, would he do a Rambo and get through ?

not if hes small and teh water levels not too high

ok, i've got him/her :) i suspect that she has been eating nothing but the snails off the plants that she was in with........any ideas on how to tempt her to eat a more varied diet :dunno:

i'm still looking for a second hand great priced tank (i know, the holy grail :fun:). when i get one.....(species tank) .........what mix of puffers can i plan to have? i noticed pufferpunk has a great tank of puffers, might just copy her :*) the tank will be anywhere between 180 lts and 400 lts

SAP eat bloodworms, brine shrimp, pretty much any type of frozen food as well as snails, algae waffels (yes, most of them do eat this) and some even accept flakes. I'd say, give him time to settle and then just try some stuff.

I recommend you do not mix puffers. Even though pufferpunk managed to do it, it most of the time results in deaths of all but 1 puffer. Pufferpunk also took years of trying, keeping an eye on it and having extra tanks cycled so she could move them right away.

In a 180l tank, I'd keep 4 SAP and no other puffers. You can try adding a bristlenose plec, that will probably work.

Actually, a daily supply of snails are all that will make it unnecessary to have to trim their tiny teeth every 4-6 months.
