i was collecting fishes in a pond nearby to see what species of fish there in the area. i came across something that looked like a black shadow, and the water was vibrating. i swooped with a dip net and caught a giant school of channel catfish, each were about an inch long if not maybe a 1/4 inch bigger. i kept 5 and tossed the rest back. i was wondering if anybody has had any luck raising channel catfish from about this size? and any tips on doing so?

I hope you have a tank as big as that pond! These grow into monsters and will eat you out of house and home.

ive actually been thinking about this for years now. ive been wanting to build a large backyard pond for fishing, that would be able to sustain itself without me. like a real pond basically. would stock it with bluegill, bass, catfish, and some other native fish. if i do so than thats where they will go. if i dont then i guess i will release them back into the wild when they get to a good size.

Unfortunately, releasing aquarium fish could have disastrous effects on the native wildlife, as aquarium diseases can be spread from your fish. I would recommend the pond idea or finding a way to humanely euthanize them when they have become very large (Makes a good dinner), instead of releasing them back into the wild.

im still thinking about the pond but the dinner sounds good too. but 1 question, because the fish is from the wild and itll be the only thing in whatever ill keep it in, wouldn't it be fine to release back? because no other aquarium fish would be introduced to it. its just a question.

Check with your local (or state/region) government agencies - here in the states the EPA, local fisheries, game warden, etc; should be able to answer that. It may depend on how long you keep it.

Bare in mind they may come into contact with diseases not currently an issues in 'the wild' in your tank :)
