hi im thinking of getting cold water fish do i have to put any chemical in the water before i get any fish i would have a pump and a light thanks

How many gallons is the tank?

Goldfisha re no different than tropicals and still need the same things. A filter is vital and should have lots of media in it. A heater is only important if you are keeping the sensitive ones so not necessary for common types and orandas.
If you want to keep a common type then you will need 20 gallons minimum as they can grow with the right care to over a foot long, so will need constant upgrading.
Doubletailed types can start at 10 gallons per fish.
You will need dechlorinator and its also useful to have aquarium salt and a gravel vac suitable to your aquarium size.
Test kits are also a must, especially for ammonia and nitrites though knowing your nitrates and ph is also worth having.
So, not really a cheap pet with the correct care but can give you over 10 years of pleasure :)
