I have build my self a CO2 injector today(only cost a fiver :D ) before I start it off I have a question.....My water is hard with a PH of 7.8, what affects will it have on the water and fish(Angels, Clown Loaches, Serpae Tetras, Redeye Tetra, Neon Tetras, a Dwarf Gouramie & a Kissing Gouramie)

Hi Sye.

I can only answer one question, unfortunately. The fish, you have to research yourself. As to the effect, yes, it certainly will. CO2 is acidic, so your pH will be more acidic. The only way to tell how much, is to check it everyday. Make sure your pH doesnt change too much, or your fish will go into shock.

Thanks for the help. All the fish can stand a lower pH(providing it doesn’t change to quick).

How long would CO2 take to change the pH...running 2 2L bottles on a 50g with a temprature of 81f?

Hey Sye.

Hmm...cant help you there. I guess a more experienced guy could help you. Make sure your pH only changes 0.2 pr 0.3 per 24 hours. Any more will be risky. So if no one turns out to know, then you will have to do it the hard way. Use it for maybe, 12 hours or so and check it. You should be able to predict it from then on. But I'd wait a while for someone to come along. You can always drop by the chat room to see whos online. Guys like Juan and CFC will help ya out.

Cheers,

Umm, semi off topic, but, can you over do CO2 injection? Can CO2 injection suffocate fishes if you were very successful at it?

Hi BM.

I doubt it. Water can only hold so much CO2. It doesnt affect the O2 i think. Not too sure though. Gotta do some research on this. Be back tomorrow with some info.

To much Co2 will plummet the ph to perhaps as low as 4.0 and the co2 will displace oxygen meaning that your nitrobacteria will have less Oxygen to live on, but if set up correctly will only have a very small effect.

For a chart and a program to download for working out Co2 levels go to

Hope this helps
