I have a pair of aquarium bred Aussi Percs. Theyre babies...only about 2 inches long if that.

I have some nice corals in the tank including two type of torches, some frogspawn and a nice hammer.

Im not sure why the clowns arent choosing to host these corals. The torches are large and healthy.

Do any of you know why they arent hosting or what I can do to nudge them to host?

Thanks in advanced

Tank bred clowns are known not to host and you will be lucky if they ever do. Wild clowns have already acquired the skill before capture and therefore will demonstrate this idiosyncratic response in the home aquarium. I also have two clowns that demonstrate little in the way of hosting behaviour. Sorry about that but that is the way things are. Hope I have helped

Regards :good:

mine didn't host anything for a year or so before taking a liking to a torch coral, then moving to a leather toadstool, give them time, it may still happen.

My clown dug a hole in the sand behind a rock and brings all of his food back there, and sleeps there.

What a dumb clown... Or maybe he must be anti-establishment and wants to live his own life free of societies rules...

Mines just as dumb and alternates between xenia, clove polyps, and the torch coral, as well as open water and they used to host my brain coral.

They are little monkeys :) Mine like my Pom Pom Xenia. I have noticed that they prefer to host nearer the sand bed rather than up a rock face so try maybe adding something low down :)

Yeah theyre weird. Every now and then i get this inkling that something instinctual is happening (no doubt it probably is) but i catch them flirting with the xenias and the brain more than the torches, FS, and hammers. Its a fairly new tank (6mo) so most of those frags are on the sand bottom.

IIreally did think hosting was an instinctual thing. If I brought in one wild clown, would they possibly learn to host?

Frustrating.

I would say, bad idea

Clowns get really territorial with other clowns. Even if they did take up refuge in something, the new one could be chased and harassed by the established pair. Even if you catch the new one and take it back to the lfs, it's totally not fair to that clown.

It's suggested that there's no more than 2 clowns to a tank.

I wouldn't do that, just stick with the pair you have. Chances are that they will host in something eventually. Mine are tank bred and just swam about the tank for ages after I first got them but eventually they learned to host first in some gold zoas(which they really messed up) and then they moved into some green hairy mushrooms where they have stayed quite happily to this day.Bottom line, be patient and let them do their thing :good:
