Is it ok to put Clown Loaches in a 29 gal. tank? I've been doing some reading and one place says that the minimum tank size should be 55gal., and then i saw someone who has them in a 29gal. So now i have no idea, so i'm asking.

I really like them, and if they're ok in a 29gal. then i'll be getting them soon. :D

Small clown loches can be kept in a 29 gallon tank but be aware that they do grow and will need at least a 75 gallon tank within a few years.

i have three clown loaches in a 29g but they are only about an 1 inch. from what i have learned it takes them a year or two b4 they start getting too big. you'll have to upgrade to a bigger tank but what a great excuse! :D

You can put YOUNG clown loaches in a 29 gallon, clown loaches are one of those fish that are more TOLLERANT of their growth being stunted, but the real question is not "can I?" but "should I?" B)

Thanks for the help. I'm going to wait a few years until i move, because when i move i'm buying something around 100-150gal. size for my new house... :D

I don't want to upset the fish if they aren't suited well for this size tank.

I too have three Clowns in my 29 gallon, but I am planning on getting another tank for them, either a 55 or a 125, depending on which one I can get a better deal on first.

They are wonderful little fish, and if you have the room, and are planning on getting a much bigger tank in the future, than I highly recommend them. Believe me, you won't be dissapointed.

I really do want some, but i can't say forsure when i can get the bigger tank. I'm only buying the larger tank when i move, because i don't want to buy it now, then have to move it in a few years. If i just can't wait... then maybe i'll buy a bigger tank in 5-6 months, but i'll try my best to wait.

Well I wish you luck in your future move, whenever that may be :D

you should be fine for a good while in a 29gal.

we have 4 in our 50us.

they were 0.75" when we got them and a year later - they are 2", 2", 1.5" and 1"

so you'll have a god few years before you have to think about re homing them.

Good decision  I think that will be better for the clown loaches in the long run.
Good luck with the move when it comes!
I'm dreading moving now, because ive finally got my planted tank looking the way i want it. I'm also glad i went ahead and got the tank though (75 gallons) even though i'll probably move next year.. and i've already moved it once this year, its a hassle but i've enjoyed having it. Plus, i have big strong friends to do all the heavy lifting for me ;)

I had to move totally across country with my fish, not a fun thing to do. But all my fish made it with no problem.

I'm really itching to get a couple of loaches... so here's my plan: I'm going to take back my 5 danio's to make some more room (even though i have alot of room as it is), and i'm going to get to 2 (or is 3 better?) clown loaches. :D In about a year, or a year and a half, or when ever they start to get longer then 2", i'll give them away. I'm going to buy the smallest ones they have, so i can keep them for a while. For all i know, when they get larger i might be ready to move. But i won't keep them in the 29gal if they grow to much. So one way or another, they will get a new home.

How does that sound?

Once clown loaches reach 2-2.5", they begin to grow very slowly. Mine have just hit this point, and I could easily keep them for another few years in my 32 gallon. Is a 75 gallon large enough for 4 clown loaches?
