I will be purchasing a percula clown for my daughter soon (ok for me)
and love the symbiotic relationship they have with anemone's but will not purchase one.
What soft corals if any would make a good alternative host for a clown.?

Thanks.

Sarcophyton, leather coral works well. However, there is no garrenty that your percula clown will take to any host. Most tank raised never do, but others have had luck getting clowns make a home in a host by taping a photo of another wild clown doing this. I have never tried this method, and my percula clown spent most of his time at the top of the tank. My marroons all took to host just fine, but every now and then the host took a tasty liking to my maroons. :sly:

How will wild clowns differ from tank raised clowns? i saw a pair of "wild caught" clowns in my LFS. I noticed they were already sold and kept separately so I am guessing they area hot item.

....sorry for using your post

Ramjet is right, Sarcophytons are great as Hosts. There is no guarentee however and basiaclly there is no gaurentee even if you used a anemone.

Taping up piccys sounds daft but it does work

some tank-raised clowns, such as the true perculas have slightly
different color patterns than "wild" ones.

other than that, the only real difference is the price, and the fact that it
is more beneficial to the fish to buy tank raised, and less chance of
disease or parasites.

Yup. My true perc has the big stripe by his face, but the mid and rear stripes are still developing. I don't know how much of the stripes he'll get.

A place for him to host is my next purchase, so thanks for posting this :) Right now, he pretty much lives in the front right top corner of my tank, but is better than he was - at least he's not floating sideways under the filter return anymore

thank YOU for posting, i was thinking about getting an animiny but i now have found a easier solution.

I have posted this piccy many times before but here is my old Maroon living in his sarcophyton leather mushroom.

we have got 2 jaff clown fish they look very similar to the clark when we fist had them they did nothing it took a couple of months before we noticed them sleeping in some red algy big leaf type looks like lettece but then they moved to our toadstool where they both sleep now will try get a pic

Navarre - I love that picture! My lfs has one like that but it's too big for my little tank. I need to go up and ask them if they ever get in smaller pieces!

hey navarre, how big is that maroon in the pic? tryin' to get an idea of how big the sarcophyton will be when I finally decide i can get it :D

The Clown was about 2.5" long when the piccy was taken. Definately not larger than 3"

The Sarcophyton was and still is about 6" across.
