I recently got a new tank. The water is very cloudy. I know what everyone is going to tell me: be patient. The only problem is that it seems to be getting worse every day. What should I do?

You are going to need to give us more information.

How long has the tank been set up?

Do you have fish in it?

What filtration are you using?

Be patient. Usually gets real bad just before it clears up. My 55 gallon was so bad at end of cycling I could barely see back of tank. Then bam  it was totally clear. How long has it been and how is your PH? Mine dropped to 6.0 at end of cycle, but once done was fine.

My tank was also very cloudy a week ago (3 weeks in the cycling - long cycling period due to frequent water changes and unexpected illness of fishes etc.) and it smell real bad. But it becomes clear all of a sudden this week! But the nitrite's still high ..... I think it's higher and higher everyday! :(

Totalbolshevik, does your tank smell bad or just cloudy water?

did it get cloudy when you put in the gravel? some gravel and sand needs a good rinse kinda before you put it in but the dust will settle and the filter sometimes can catch it after time. also some internal filters make it look worse by adding really fine bubbles to the water that look like cloudy water. so what filter are you using.

Is the cloudy greenish or gray(ish) - like milk in water? If gray, it's ok - it's normal bacteria behavior. If greenish, then it isn't ok.

Nutrafin produce a product called ClearParticulate which removes cloudiness in under 2 hours without harming fish. Always better not to add chemicals into a tank but good if all else fails.
