Is it normal to have cloudy water during the early stages of the fishless cycle?

Yes, that's a bacteria bloom

Yes, as sorrel said, its a bacteria bloom, you will probably get an algae bloom next, just hang in there, it will sort itself out.

Agree with all the above. My tank was cloudy for weeks. I kept going to the LFS and was inches away from buying water clarifiers. I held off and everyone was right...my tank is almost sparkling clear right now going into my 4th month. Hang in there and, sheesh...that hated phrase...be patient and dont' overfeed. SH

I'm fishless cycling right now too and its really cloudy, along with some green and brown algae.
