I have had my tank now since the past Xmas, stocked with buenos ares tetras, red tail black shark, tiger Barbs and some cory's. I use fake plants. The water levels are thoroughly tested however just a week ago the water became very cloudy. A tetra, red-tail black shark and a barb ended up dying. it seems like the tank began to recycle. When I tested the water levels at this point they were way out of wack. What happened?

I ended up doing many 3/4 tank water changes in order to remove the cloudiness and normalize the waterlevels.

If you had cloudy white water, you had a bacterial bloom. I haven't been able to figure out what exactly causes them, but it is realtively harmless to fish and should clear up on its own within a week.

What exactly were your water stats? and what are they now? This is probably the reason your fish died.

As for what could have caused it, did you use dechlorinator in your tank the last time you did a water change? Did you clean your filter out? Sometimes getting over zealous with cleaning will cause a minicycle to start.
